Congregation Bircat Shalom arranges the sale of hametz each year before Passover. A form is circulated by email to the congregation and to anyone on our announcement list; email the shul and we will include you.

Do Sephardic Jews eat rice on Passover?

Yes. Sephardic communities, including ours, eat kitniyot such as rice and legumes on Pesah, after careful checking. Ashkenazi practice is to refrain, and both customs sit comfortably side by side in our congregation.

Customs of the days

Selling the hametz: Arranged through the shul each year before Pesah. A form goes out by email so nobody is left holding hametz over the holiday.
Kitniyot: Sephardic families eat rice and legumes on Pesah, checked carefully beforehand. Ashkenazi guests at our table are of course kept in mind.
The Seder in Sephardic order: The Haggadah is read with our own melodies, the seder plate raised over the heads of the family at Bibhilu, and the ten plagues counted in Hebrew and in Arabic or Ladino by many of our families.
Counting the Omer: The Omer is counted from the second night, every evening in shul after Arbit, through to Shavuot.
Shevi'i shel Pesah: The seventh day, the splitting of the sea, with the Song of the Sea read in the full congregational melody.
Maimouna: The North African custom the night the holiday ends — sweets, mufleta, milk and honey, and blessings for the year in every home that keeps it.

Selling your hametz

Every year before Pesah the shul arranges the sale of hametz on behalf of the congregation. The form goes out by email a couple of weeks beforehand — email the shul to be included, or leave your address below and it will reach you automatically. Everyone is welcome

Congregation Bircat Shalom is a family-friendly Sephardic Orthodox synagogue in West Boca Raton, serving Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Coral Springs, Parkland and Deerfield Beach.
